This game only has five maps, but each of them are incredibly well balanced. NPCs fighting each other, lacing the background with beams and bombs, makes some of the best backdrops in any game. There are a ton of little corvettes zipping around each other and renegade cruisers taking potshots from the flank. However, the players aren't the only ones in the arena. The 8v8 matches usually play out with a team moving together, more from moving so slowly that they have little other choice, as if they get caught out in the open on their own, they're dead. Dogfights are much more dramatic in a moment to moment basis than the slow, tactical giant warships figuring out how to best blast each other and with how many weapons while also managing their resources. It's the most personal and, to be honest, more engaging in combat. Space sims tend to be pretty focused on controlling a starfighter. ![]()
